About this deal

The fact that an adult could put these feelings into words so beautifully is what makes this book, and this author, very special to me. She has served on Newbery, written for Horn Book, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person. Hoban's cheery illustrations, bathed in the iridescent yellows of summer sunshine, accompany a spare, direct text that tells of a child picking flowers for her mother. While I thing the moral of the story is a good one, I believe the story could have been shortened quite a bit and still convey the same message as effectively. That's the end of Frances's jam-only days, as she discovers, in her own winsome way, that variety really is the spice of mealtimes. Believe it or not I shared this book with my husband when I read it again, and even he enjoyed it, showing that Frances is still beloved through many years, generations, and even ages of readers. I like the way that her parents chose to address her problem by helping her to understand how boring it is to eat one thing all the time rather than forcing her to eat something she doesn’t want. I have celery, carrot sticks, and black olives, and a little cardboard shaker of salt for the celery.Bread and Jam for Frances is a Level Two I Can Read book, geared for kids who read on their own but still need a little help. What I take away from this book is that having rules to follow simply means someone cares enough about you to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. Bread and Jam” may be my favorite book in the Frances series, perhaps because I have prepared so many school lunches.

The illustrations are old school and include lots of texture as though things like pencils, charcoal, and chalks were used to create the illustrations. Main Characters: Frances (the Badger), Mother Badger, Father Badger, baby sister Gloria and schoolfriend Albert. John spends most of his time drawing monsters of all shapes, sizes and colors, and his parents are worried. The classic funny story about a stubborn little badger with very particular tastes in food--now in the always-appealing 8x8 format! That well-loved class of first-graders is delightful in another adventure, this one starring George.

Bedtime for Frances, A baby sister for Frances, A birthday for Frances, Best Friends for Frances and A bargain for Frances. I loved reading this again - there's so many warm and fuzzy memories caught up in the examination of a book you loved as a child, seen through the eyes of the adult. And I love the songs Frances sings to solidify her position on Jam sandwhiches "Jam for snack and jam for meals, I know how a jam jar jeels--FULL. It was recorded at Brilliant Studios in San Francisco and Private Island Trax in Hollywood and mastered at Private Island Trax.

It covers questions of community, relationships, the self, conceptions of the environment, and ethics.

The Hobans have done it again: a sly text attacking a real juvenile problem and attractive illustrations.
