About this deal

It can auto duplex with A4 paper for instance, enlarge photocopies from A4 to A3 and print on a very wide variety of blank media.

This also beats Canon’s G650 and G7050 A4 ink-tank printers and beats the speeds achieved by Epson’s four-colour ET-2750. Equally, the scanner function was great, with the resolution of 1,200 x 4,800dpi providing as much detail as you could want. My most important criteria was the paper handling and could I load more than 2 or 3 sheets of heavy glossy paper at one time. However, there are significantly cheaper printers with better color accuracy, like the Canon PIXMA TR8620a. For Premium Glossy, the "High" quality setting (the highest that can be selected) has substantially better contrast, saturation and resolution (1440 dpi) than the "Standard" setting. Not only do you go through more of them if you print with any regularity, but they’re also wasteful. But, as is the case with the glossy output, unless you’re a fine-art photographer, you’re not going to feel that the ET-8500 is holding you back, at least with respect to the quality of the prints. If I had one complaint, it would be that you can’t set the option for thick papers from the print driver, only from the touchscreen, and when you change that setting, it is reset once you power down the printer.

My advice would be to play around with all three modes, and see if you can tell any appreciable difference in your prints. While the ET-8500 excels when printing on glossy and luster papers, my results with matte or fine art papers were quite good as well. I expected colour printing to cost more than the four-colour systems because there’s simply more ink involved. If you want the best photo printing quality, the ET-8550 is a better choice as it has a wider color range and better color accuracy. For the ET-8550, not all the quality settings are available for all media types, moreover the names of the quality settings mean different things for different media. With our forward-thinking Micro Piezo heat-free technology, you can enjoy consistent high-speed printing, with greatly reduced energy consumption and less need for replacement parts. With extreme colors, like bright green or dark purple, the printer fared a bit less well, but real-world images still looked great. In addition to the standard process colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK), the ET-8550 has two additional inks, Photo Black and Gray.
