About this deal

The Ability cards that skew the game further towards asymmetry carry strategies all their own, and they are a seamless and worthy addition.

Take two well-known design principles, insert a twist, create an immersive yet easy-going and fast gameplay, and you might as well be looking at gaming's next big thing. However, I also found that the variable bidding disc was the main thing that added a considerable amount of analysis paralysis, even for seasoned players, and greatly extended the game length. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The game felt a little like Nidavellir with the bidding that always rewards even the losers (through compensation).

There is also an advanced variant which I enjoy, but perhaps is not suited for game one whereby players cannot rearrange the placement of the cards once they have them. To be honest, the lighter and usually more obvious Production phase, while a potential weakness in the design, is a kindness—a gift to offset the agonizing bids regardless of the variant chosen.

They’re not actually that hard, but compared to the “plug and play” ability of the rest of the expansion, it’s definitely a lot more overhead. It is linked to Set-Collection, Hand-Management, Tableau building, and in a way Tech-Trees too; some of which are present in this game as well. Three games wallowing in a lot of minutes – minutes stuffed with observations, rammed with remarks and runneth(ing) over with criticismé.

A near-perfect design like Furnace doesn’t hardly need an expansion, but for experienced veterans, there’s a lot of fun new toys here, and I’d plan on playing with all of it more often than not. Throughout the auction process, you’ll trade turns putting one of your four discs on a market of cards.

Agricola has done this exhaustively, yet the most appropriate game to compare this part of Furnace with would be Res Arcana. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There is the interesting auction mechanic in which the cards are acquired, and the clever idea for compensation for any losing bid which makes this part of the game a lot of fun too. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! And you’ll grow your wealth by purchasing company cards that produce resources, transform resources, or turn resources into money.
