About this deal

This would also benefit the children as they could also spend a lesson in making their own storyboard/comic strip of retelling a Greek Myth.

This irreverently funny book is just right for children 9 and up who shy away from anything that smacks of schoolwork and can be a bridge to territory they might otherwise never visit.

Marcia Williams retells the stories of Pandora and her little box of horrors, and Perseus the Gorgon slayer in her distinctive, witty and accessible style. I had heard some of the myths before but it was enjoyable to read about new characters and creatures. Reason for Reading: All my readers should know by now that mythology is a favourite subject of mine, especially Greek. In this collection, Williams retells eight myths using simple language and a unique comic-strip format.

In this book, you'll find the stories of Theseus, conqueror of the dreaded Minotaur; the mighty Heracles and his twelve tasks; the tragic lovers Orpheus and Eurydice; Perseus, the Gorgon-slayer; the musician Arion and his rescue by the dolphins; Pandora and her little box of horrors; the feather-clad fliers Daedalus and Icarus; and the weaving contest between Arachne and the goddess Athene. Curriculum Connection: I would offer this book to the class after the basics of Greek mythology were addressed. The comic strip style appeals to us because it has lots of detailed pictures as well as short pieces of writing to tell the story. Marcia Williams is known for her adaptation of classic stories into a graphic novel style books for younger readers.Panels and spreads brimming with color and nonstop action make each tale a pleasure to look at and voice balloons add modern humor. While the stories are brief, they tend to stick to the major details of the original myths, the basic plot lines are there and the important themes are kept in play. We recommended this book because it’s very creative and we really like the comic bok style because the pictures tell you more information and they are funny! I really liked that there were myths I was not too familiar with, and that they were all focused on different characters. Meet the mighty gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus and some of the world's best-loved heroes and heroines.
